When Jesus came at God’s command
His people to redeem,
He was by his forerunner’s hand
Baptized in Jordan’s stream.
Why should the Son of God divine
All pure and good within,
Receive the penitential sign
Of washing from all sin?
The Spirit without measure then,
Had been on him bestowed;
Yet he would honour before men,
The ordinance of God.
And so should we who give praise
And wish to do his will,
Like him, in all our works and ways,
All righteousness fulfil.
O Jesus in thy name baptized
We thus our faith confess;
And are content to be despised,
If thou wilt own and bless.
Before the world we thus obey
Thy wise and good command;
And may we at the judgement day
Among thy servants stand.
