Lord, hear our prayer
for this new year (day);
Despite our longing for release
From all that fosters fear and strife,
we have not walked your way of peace.
May we sow love where hate is found,
Forgiveness though we suffer smart,
In place of discord, unity,
And faith to heal the doubting heart:
Replace despair with lively hope,
Darkness dispel with dawning light,
And where the night of sorrow reigns
May we bring joy, the day-star bright,
Teach us anew each passing year (day)
More readily to heed and share
The gladness of rejoicing hearts,
The burden of another’s care.
As in our giving we receive,
In pard’ning we shall be forgiven,
And, rising to new life in Christ,
Attain at last the joys of heaven.
