Long ago when heathen darkness
Kept our fathers chained in fears,
Dauntless strangers came and sought them,
Showed a cross and woke their tears.
Strange the tongue in which they worshipped,
Strange the altars where they prayed,
But our fathers learned of Jesus,
And no longer were afraid.
Then the scholars, wise and holy,
Brought to us the book so dear,
Clothed it in our nation’s language,
Made it homely, made it clear.
So the story of redemption
All the heart of Britain stirred,
Touched the tongue of Britain, set it
Singing of the glorious Word.
And its wonder, strength and virtue
Passed into our nation’s soul,
Touched with grace and common living,
Turned us toward the heavenly goal.
Thanks to God for all the heroes
Through whose toil we have this prize;
Give us grace Thy word to cherish,
By its truth our souls make wise.
