Is there ambition in my heart?
Search, gracious God, and see;
Or do I act a haughty part?
Lord, I appeal to Thee.
Whate'er thine all-discerning eye
Sees for thy creature fit,
I'll bless the good, and to the ill
Contentedly submit.
Let not despair nor fell revenge
Be to my bosom known;
O give me tears for others' woe,
And patience for my own.
Feed me, O Lord, with needful food
I ask not wealth or fame;
But give me eyes to view thy works,
A heart to praise thy name.
O may my days obscurely pass,
Without remorse or care;
And let me for my parting hour
From day to day prepare.
I charge my thoughts, be humble still,
And all my carriage mild,
Content, my Father, with Thy will,
And quiet as a child.
The patient soul, the lowly mind,
Shall have a large reward:
Let saints in sorrow lie resigned,
And trust a faithful Lord.
---Alternative verses---
I charge my thoughts, be humble still,
And all my actions mild,
Content, my Father, with Thy will,
And quiet as a child.
