Hymn/Song Information

Begin my soul the exalted lay let each enraptured

Begin, my soul, th'exalted lay;
let each enraptured thought obey,
and praise th'Almighty's Name:
let heaven and earth, and sea and skies,
in one melodious concert rise,
to swell th'inspiring theme.

Thou heaven of heavens, his vast abode,
Ye clouds, proclaim your forming God;
Ye thunders, speak his power:
Lo ! on the lightening's gleamy wing
In triumph walks the eternal king;
Th' astonished worlds adore.

Ye deeps, with roaring billows rise,
To join the thunders of the skies,
Praise him who bids you roll;
His praise in softer notes declare,
Each whispering breeze of yielding air,
And breathe it to the soul.

Wake, all ye souring throngs, and sing,
Ye cheerful warblers of the spring;
Harmonious anthems raise
To him who shaped your finer mould,
Who tipped your glittering winds with gold,
And tuned your voice to praise.

Ye angels, catch the thrilling sound,
while all the adoring thrones around
his boundless mercy sing;
let every listening saint above
wake all the tuneful soul of love,
and touch the sweetest string.

Whate'er this living world contains,
that wings the air or treads the plains,
united praise bestow;
ye tenants of the ocean wide,
proclaim him through the mighty tide,
and in the deeps below.

Let man, by nobler passions swayed,
the feeling heart, the judging head,
in heavenly praise employ;
spread his tremendous Name around,
till heaven's broad arch rings back the sound
the general burst of joy.

Begin, my soul, th'exalted lay;
let each enraptured thought obey,
and praise th'Almighty's Name:
Lo! heaven and earth, and sea and skies,
in one melodious concert rise,
to swell th'inspiring theme.

Let every element rejoice,
Ye thunders, burst with awful voice,
To him who bids you roll;
His praise in softer notes declare,
Each whispering breeze of yielding air,
And breathe it to the soul.

Wake, all ye souring throngs, and sing,
Ye feathered warblers of the spring;
Harmonious anthems raise
To him who shaped your finer mould,
Who tipped your glittering winds with gold,
And tuned your voice to praise.

Let man, by nobler passions swayed,
the feeling heart, the judging head,
in heavenly praise employ;
spread the Creator's Name around,
till heaven's broad arch rings back the sound
the general burst of joy.

Thou heaven of heavens, his vast abode,
Ye clouds, proclaim your Maker God;
Ye thunders, speak his power:
Lo! on the lightning's fiery wing
In triumph walks th' eternal king;
Th' astonished worlds adore.

Let man, by nobler passions swayed,
Let man, in God's own image made,
His breath in praise employ;
spread wide his Maker's name around,
till heaven shall echo back the sound
In songs of holy joy.

Let man, by nobler passions swayed,
Let man, in God's own image made,
His breath in praise employ;
Spread wide his Maker's name around,
While heaven's broad arch rings back the sound
The song of holy joy!
