PRAYER FOR DELIVERANCE

O Lord, our fathers oft have told
in our attentive ears,
Thy wonders in their days performed,
and elder times than theirs:

How thou, to plant them here, didst drive
the heathen from this land;
Dispeopled by repeated strokes
of thy avenging hand.

For, not their courage; nor their sword,
to them possession gave;
No strength, that from unequal force
their fainting troops could save:

But thy right hand and powerful arm,
whose succour they implored;
Thy presence with the chosen race,
who thy great Name adored.

As thee their God our fathers owned,
thou art our sovereign King;
O therefore, as thou didst to them,
to us deliverance bring.

Through thy victorious Name our arms
the proudest foes shall quell,
And crush them with repeated strokes,
as oft as they rebel.

I'll neither trust my bow nor sword,
when I in fight engage;
But thee, who hast our foes subdued,
and shamed their spiteful rage.

To thee the triumph we ascribe,
from whom the conquest came;
In God we will rejoice all day,
and ever bless his Name.

---Alternative verses---

O Lord our fathers oft have told,
In our attentive ears,
Thy wonders in their days performed,
And in more ancient years.

'T was not their courage nor their sword
To them salvation gave;
'T was not their number nor their strength
That did their country save;

For, not their courage; nor their sword,
to them salvation gave;
No strength, that from unequal force
their fainting troops could save:

But thy right hand, thy powerful arm,
Whose succor they implored:
Thy providence protected them,
Who thy great name adored.

As thee, their God, our fathers owned,
So thou art still our King;
O, therefore, as thou didst to them,
To us deliverance bring.

To thee the glory we'll ascribe,
From whom salvation came;
In God, our shield, we will rejoice,
And ever bless thy name.
