Lord Jesus may our temper be Daily to

Lord Jesus may our temper be
Daily to take the cross like thee;
Content to bear it by thy side,
And with thee to be crucified.

Thy life seemed short, thy death seemed nigh,
When thou didst walk to Calvary;
So may we feel, a moment gone
And all our work on earth is done.

Thou didst consent to suffer thus,
And to be crucified for us;
And thus may we, beneath thine eye,
Our lusts condemn and crucify.

The world has done for thee its worst,
It has blasphemed, condemned, and cursed;
Thou didst not heed its judgement then,
Nor seek that hour the praise of men.

So make us willing men should say
Of us, “Away with them, away,”
Give them the scourge, the buffet give,
“It is not fit that they should live.”

Like thee may we love God and man,
Do all the good on earth we can;
All happiness for all create,
And then be willing men should hate.

Heedless of scorn that they may cast,
Remembering God will judge at last,
May we ask him our way to try,
Who ever judgeth righteously.

So Saviour may we bear the cross,
Content to suffer shame and loss;
Anticipate our blest abode,
Despise the same and rise to God.
