Arise, our tenderest thoughts arise,
To torrents melt our streaming eyes;
And let us all with anguish feel
The evils which we cannot heal.
See human nature sunk in shame,
See scandals poured on Jesus’ name
The Father slighted in the Son
His gifts abused, the soul undone.
See the short course of vain delight
Closing in everlasting night
In flames that no abatement know,
In tears which must for ever flow.
O God we feel the mournful scene,
We grieve for sinful dying men;
And fain our pity would reclaim,
And snatch the firebrand from the flame.
But feeble our compassion proves,
And can but weep where most it loves;
Thine own all-saving arm employ,
And turn our anxious grief to joy.
