Giver of concord, Prince of peace,
Be thou our help and shield;
And make each angry passion cease,
If e’er to wrath we yield.
Thou who dids’t come with heart of flame,
Boldly God’s work to do,
And yet the meek and patient Lamb,
Dids’t come to suffer too,
Into our hearts thy spirit breathe,
That we may learn to be,
Faithful and firm unto the death,
But mild and kind like thee.
Let thy example be our guide,
Thy grace our passion check;
Thy lowliness rebuke our pride,
Thy meekness make us meek.
May he who like the lowly dove
Once rested on thy head,
His peace, and gentleness and love,
Upon our spirits shed.
So may we keep the ancient way,
Each generous heart to move,
And force a wondering world to say,
See how these Christians love.
