Great God, assembled in thy name,
We hope to meet thee here;
Grant us a calm and prayerful frame,
With love and godly fear.
One day of prayer and grateful praise,
If thou thy presence give,
Is better than ten thousand days
Such as the godless live.
Thou art thy people’s sun, to chase
Their doubts and fears away;
Enrich them with each precious grace,
And bless them when they pray.
Thou art their everlasting shield,
From sorrow, sin, and shame;
Alone, they would to Satan yield,
But conquer in thy name.
Not wilt thou any good withhold,
Since they from guilt set free,
And safe within the Saviour’s fold;
Do follow him and thee.
How happy all their journey through
They who thy love possess!
How worthy of all blessings, thou
Who dost the unworthy bless!
