Hail the day that sees him rise,
Taken from his people's eyes!
Christ, awhile to mortals given,
Re-ascends his native heaven.
There the glorious triumph waits,
Open wide ye heavenly gates;
Christ hath vanquished death and sin,
Take the King of Glory in.
See the heaven its Lord receives,
Yet he loves the earth he leaves;
Though returning to his throne,
Still he calls mankind his own.
There for us he intercedes,
His atoning death he pleads;
Saviour of the human race,
There for us prepares a place.
Jesus, unto thee we cry,
On thy throne exalted high;
Us in all our weakness seem
Ever looking up to thee.
Grant, though parted from our sight,
Far above yon azure height,
All our hearts may thither rise,
Seeking thee beyond the skies.
