High as the arched and starry skies
Above our earthly structures rise,
O God, thy mercy and thy grace,
Our highest hopes and thoughts surpass.
Mountains shall crumble into dust,
But thou canst ne’er become unjust;
And ocean’s depths may be explored,
But who can comprehend the Lord?
Thou art unfathomed and alone,
Thy wisdom is a deep unknown,
Thy bounty and thy guardian care
We with all living creatures share.
How excellent thy works and ways,
Passing thy people’s highest praise!
And sweet it is to love and trust
A God so wise, and good, and just.
Those who can trust thee, now possess
A satisfying happiness;
And those who love thee, when they die,
Shall enter on eternal joy.
For from thyself, thou source of good,
Life flows an everlasting flood;
And, like the cloudless noon-day light,
Thy favour makes existence bright.
