Holy Spirit, from on high,
Bend on us a pitying eye;
Stubborn hearts whose guilt is great,
By thy word regenerate.
Light up every dark recess
Of concealed ungodliness,
Make them leave each evil way,
Where they still perversely stray.
May they with repentant grief,
Ask for pardon and relief;
Then the Saviour’s blood reveal
Which their deep disease may heal.
Other ground-work should they lay,
Sweep their empty hopes away;
Till they trust him who alone
Could for all their sins atone.
Make us all to grow in grace,
Run with joy our Christian race;
And with more of faith and love
Seek our Father’s house above.
