How blest are sinners when,
Their sins are covered o’er,
To whom the sovereign Judge of men,
imputes their guilt no more!
Contrite and guileless now,
Their sins they meekly own;
While to the yoke of Christ they bow,
And trust his blood alone.
All who their sins conceal,
Must prove God’s heavy hand:
But those who own their sins and feel,
Through Christ acquitted stand.
Let men confess and pray
In time of their distress;
Confession is the only way,
To pardon and to peace.
