How can we, great Creator, praise
Or love thee as we ought,
Since we redeemed by boundless grace,
At such a price are bought?
Glory, O God of grace, to thee,
E’er earth or time begun
Thou didst ordain that we should be
Beloved through Christ thy Son.
‘Twas for our sakes the Saviour came,
‘Twas for our life he died;
And thou dost give us, in his name,
All other good beside.
Thy mercy pardoned all our sins,
Thy grace our hearts subdued;
And grace completes what it begins,
And perfects the renewed.
Grace, too, for higher joys prepares,
The seal which thou hast given;
To mark that thou hast made us heirs
Of endless bliss in heaven.
O God of grace, can thought explore
Thy grace so great and free?
May all thy boundless love adore,
And more than all may we!
No praise thy goodness can express,
No love thy love repay;
Angels thy name adoring bless,
And we owe more than they.
