How shall we praise the Eternal God,
The infinite unknown?
We can ascend his high abode,
Or reach his awful throne?.
The Great Invisible! he dwells
Concealed in dazzling light;
While his all-searching eye dispels
The thickest shades of night.
Those watchful eyes that never sleep,
Survey the world around:
His wisdom is a boundless deep,
Where all our thoughts are drowned.
His will is law, his arm is strong
To save or to destroy;
And he eternal to prolong
His children’s life and joy.
He knows no shadow of a change,
not alters his decrees;
Firm as a rock his truth remains
To guard his promises.
By all his works his power is shown,
All prove that he is good;
And he has sent his only Son
To save us by his blood.
Now let us praise our glorious King;
And, resting on his word,
As pardoned sinners ever sing
The goodness of the Lord.
