Jehovah, thou the eternal God,
Hast been thy children’s safe abode;
Their refuge, through the ages past,
Their hope while time itself shall last.
Before the mountains had their birth,
Before thy hands had formed the earth,
From everlasting thou, supreme,
Art God, to endless years the same.
But man, to whom thou gavest breath,
At thy command sinks down to death;
Thou say’st “Return, ye sons of men,”
And man return to dust again.
Like grass he springs, at morn ‘tis seen,
Arrayed in verdure fresh and green;
Like grass cut don his glories fade,
And withe ere the evening shade.
