Jesus, the Son of God, hath died,
Our sins to bear, our guilt to hide;
We must not do what made him die,
Nor love what caused his agony.
Jesus hath loved us, and will love;
Faithful hath proved, and still will prove;
Our Saviour, Shepherd, Brother, Friend,
From the beginning to the end.
Jesus is our atoning Priest,
Whose death hath us from death released;
He ever pleads our cause with God,
And hath prepared our bright abode.
Sin brought him to the accursed tree,
Oppressed him at Gethsemane;
Tortured his heart while here below,
And is his just abhorrence now.
We must not break his holy laws,
We must not hurt his sacred cause,
Nor put him to an open shame,
Nor make the world blaspheme his name.
Jesus, may thy example shine
Before us that we may not sin;
In us all love and zeal create,
And make us hate what thou dost hate.
