Like Jesus we must do God’s will,
His rights maintain, his law fulfil;
Like Jesus seek the lost to save,
Now sinking lower than the grave.
To rescue men from endless pains,
To live for God where Satan reigns,
Each day in goodness to improve,
Prepares us for our home above.
This is the road we must pursue,
This is the work we have to do;
Not to enjoy the passing hour,
Not to seek pleasure, wealth, or power.
We must deny ourselves in all
Which makes us deaf to duty’s call;
Or hinders faith, and hope, and love,
Or drags our hearts from things above.
We must deny ourselves whene’er
Our hearts would plead a sin to spare;
The dearest idol cast away
And God in everything obey.
Thus as the Lord himself denied
We must renounce all pomp and pride;
Live as our Saviour lived, and rise
To share his life above the skies.
