No God for me! the fool exclaims,
And half believes the wish he frames;
‘Twere well there was no God for them,
Whom God exists but to condemn.
Plunges in the desperate depths of sin,
Debased without, corrupt within,
What wonder men should wish to fly
An awful omnipresent eye?
Yet doth he from his throne above
Hold out the sceptre of his love;
And offer peace to them, to all
That contrite at his feet will fall.
Cease then, O sinner to provoke
Your Maker’s anger, take his yoke;
Renounce your unbelief and sin
And you eternal life shall win.
And thou blessed Saviour deign to bring
The wanderers back to God their King;
And by the cross each rebel draw,
To trust thy love and keep the law.
