No seraph could for us atone,
Or plead for us in prayer:
Nor of all creatures was there one
Could save us from despair.
But that which seraphs could not win,
Nor man’s despairing groan,
Our rescue from the doom of sin,
Jesus our Lord has won.
His death has bought our endless life,
His toil secured our rest;
Henceforth then let our only strife
Be, who shall love him best.
