O God permit us not to be,
Forgetful of ourselves and thee;
Whate’er we do, where’er we rove,
Still may we grow in faith and love.
Why should the idols of the earth,
make us forget our heavenly birth?
Why, for the sake of things below,
Should we let better blessings go?
Once we were slaves of sin and sense,
Thy mighty grace has called us thence;
Still may we heed the voice divine,
And all corrupt pursuits resign.
When from the world’s gay scenes withdrawn,
We see its once prized friendship gone,
In thee and in thy ways we find,
Far nobler pleasures for the mind.
