O God, whene’er thy saints offend,
Thou has a gentle rod;
The trials thou in love dost send,
Shall make them serve their God.
Blest is the man thy hands chastise,
And to his duty draw;
Thy chastenings make thy children wise,
When they forget thy law.
But God will ne’er cast off his saints,
Nor his own covenant break;
He hearkens to their meek complaints,
For their Redeemer’s sake.
