Out of the depths of sin and woe,
To thee O God we pray;
Thy all-sufficient grace bestow,
Take all our guilt away.
Should’st thou with thine all-seeing eye
And thy almighty hand,
Mark and avenge iniquity,
Jehovah, who could stand.
But there is pardon full and free,
Since Christ our sins did bear,
That sinners reconciled to thee,
Might love, obey, and fear.
We wait thy help and mercy Lord,
With earnest longing wait;
For we rely upon thy word,
And know thy love is great.
If travellers in night’s stormy hour,
Long for the dawn of day,
No less we long to see thy power:
That power to save display.
In God let all believers trust,
Whate’er their dangers seem;
For he is good, as well as just,
And mighty to redeem.
He pardons sinners through his Son,
He rescues the enslaved;
And all who trust to Christ alone,
Shall by his grace be saved.
