Plunged in the depths of guilt and pain
We wretched sinners lay;
Without the strength to rise again,
Hell-doomed and Satan’s prey.
Exposed to God’s most righteous course,
And heirs of shame and wrath;
laden with griefs, and doomed to worse,
We held our downward path.
Then from his glorious throne on high,
Did God’s eternal Son,
Come down that he might bleed and die
For that which we have done.
Jesus for us a curse was made,
By God forsaken seemed;
For us an awful ransom paid,
And by his cross redeemed.
Oh love surpassing all beside
To creatures of the dust!
The holiest for the unholy died,
The just for the unjust.
He died; and since he suffered this
To make his foes friends,
His sufferings have obtained for us,
Glory which never ends.
Oh, for this love, may every heart
Become his lasting throne;
Each with his proud rebellion part,
And earth her sovereign own.
May men redeemed from sin and hell,
His matchless grace adore;
And heaven with all its millions tell
His love for evermore.
