The gospel calls to peace and love,
And bids us, as believers, be
Like serpents wise, and like the dove,
Adorned with meek simplicity.
if e’er unholy tempers rise,
Anger, or pride, or selfish strife,
To Jesus we will lift our eyes,
Bright pattern of th Christian life.
For he was meek, and good, and kind,
Lowly, and ready to forgive;
And meet it is his faultless mind,
Should be the rule by which we live.
To do his heavenly Father’s will
Was his employment and delight;
While constant love and holy zeal,
Shone through his life divinely bright.
He raised to strength the palsied frame,
He healed the sick, he soothed distress;
And scattering good where’er he came,
He lived to love, he toiled to bless,
Thy fair example, Lord, we trace
To teach us what we ought to be;
Oh, grant us thy transforming grace,
To make us daily more like thee.
