The righteous Lord, the good, the great,
Did the vast universe create;
O’er all the earth his power extends,
All heaven before his footstool bends.
Yet justice still with power presides,
And mercy all his empire guides:
Mercy is pleasing in his sight,
Justice and truth are his delight.
No more ye wise your wisdom boast;
No more ye strong your valour trust;
Nor let the youthful trust their health,
Nor the rich glory in their wealth.
Let us exult in this alone,
That God our God to us is known;
That we have owned his sovereign sway,
And learnt his precepts to obey.
All else that we our treasure call,
May in one fatal moments fall;
But what his happiness can move,
Whom the Almighty deigns to love?
