Thou Sovereign of the angelic host,
What thanks are owed thee by the lost,
Whom thou from an abyss doth save,
More deep, more gloomy, than the grave.
Great as our guilt and sin have been,
Thou hast forgiven what thou has seen,
Our reigning sins thou hast subdued,
Our tempers changed, our hearts renewed.
Nor are we spared alone, for thou
Hast placed us with thy children now;
And, having all our sins forgiven,
Wilt soon receive us into heaven.
Thou too wilt keep us to the end,
From Satan and from sin defend;
Bear us unharmed through earthly snares,
And own us as with Christ co-heirs.
Now therefore, by thy Spirit taught,
And by thy love eternal bought,
May we to thee thy rights restore,
And ever serve thee more and more.
May we as saved and pardoned thus,
Abide in Christ, and he in us;
In joyful praise our moments spend,
And trust him as our faithful friend.
Thy love and care we daily prove,
Thee may we then supremely love;
And thy most gracious will to do,
Love all our fellow-creatures too.
In love may we pursue our road;
By love prepare to meet our God:
As thou art perfect so may we
Grow like to Jesus and to thee.
Believing all our Saviour saith,
Abounding in his work till death,
May we all daily grow in grace,
Till we shall see him face to face.
Thy long lost image may we gain;
Then rise with Christ in bliss to reign;
And till our home in heaven is won,
May all thy will be us be done.
