Thus the eternal Father spake
To Christ our Lord: "Ascend and sit
At my right hand, unitl I make
Thy foes unto thy power submit.
From Zion doth his word proceed;
His word, the sceptre of his hand,
And he must rule till all shall bend,
Their stubborn wills to his command.
Earth, through its peopled realms shall know
His power can make the nations bring
Themselves by a spontaneous vow,
To be a free-will offering.
Those whom his love and mercy bless,
Age after age their monarch view,
Still radiant in his holiness,
Still fresh as is the morning dew.
For God hath sworn upon his throne,
That Christ should come the world to gain,
A Priest, for sinners to atone,
A King, o’er every heart to reign.
