To the cross of shame they bound him,
Darkness veiled the mid-day sky;
Midst the blasphemies around him
Hear the dying Saviour cry,
: “It is finished;” :
“Finished,” heaven and earth reply.
To redeem mankind anointed,
Jesus, God’s beloved Son,
Has fulfilled the work, appointed
By his Father to be done:
: It is finished, :
Heaven for sinners now is won.
See fulfilled what prophets gifted,
Types and offerings did proclaim;
See the brazen serpent lifted,
See in him the Paschal lamb:
: It is finished, :
All for which to earth he came.
Foes unnumbered there assembled,
Powers of earth and powers beneath;
But the hosts of darkness trembled,
Triumph marked his parting breath;
: It is finished; :
Hell is conquered by his death.
He has passed through tribulation,
Sharp and long to save his friends;
But his lasting exaltation,
All the suffering far transcends:
: It is finished :
Shame in boundless glory ends.
Saints, that cross is your salvation,
not for you is wrath decreed;
You have safety through his passion,
‘Tis for you that he did bleed:
: It is finished, :
By his sufferings we are freed.
We were lost, but he has sought us,
Slaves of sin by passion driven;
We are saved and he hath bought us,
For through him we are forgiven:
: It is finished. :
He is King of earth and heaven.
