We love, O Lord, the sacred day
On which thy people meet to pray;
We love to hear the hymn ascend,
Mingling with those that never end.
And sweet it is, with mind sedate,
Upon thy word to meditate,
Till we by faith, can see thee nigh,
Our life and strength, our hope and joy.
Better one day of praise and prayer,
Gladdened by faith, and freed from care,
Than thousands spent in vain delight,
Which ends in everlasting night.
Better the humblest lot to share
With saints beneath thy guardian care,
Than have the wealth of earth, with those
Whose all is what the earth bestows.
For, like the sun which flames above,
Thou art the source of light and love;
And, as a shield, thy favouring power
Protects us in each trying hour.
Our riches are thy love and grace,
Our home thy heavenly dwelling place;
Nor will thy children ever want
Aught that Almighty Love can grant.
