We love thee, gracious God, for when
We erred and went astray,
Thou didst recall us back again
Into the homeward way.
When we were sleeping in the deep
Of error’s starless night,
Thou didst awake us from our sleep,
And thou didst give us light.
When we resolved thy laws to break,
And scorned to do thy will;
Thou would’st not even then, forsake
But wast our Father still.
We love thee because sins so great
So freely are forgiven;
And rebels in a ruined state
Are made the heirs of heaven.
Though we have oft forgotten thee
Thou hast not us forgot;
And though our failings thou dost see,
Yet thou forsakest not.
When our eternal death was nigh,
For sins which we have done;
Thou gavest us thy Son to die,
Thy well-beloved Son.
Oh, wondrous love! to bid us live
Through his atoning pain;
And then thy Spirit too to give
That we with him may reign.
We love thee, for thou savest thus
Those who so faithless prove;
We love thee, for thou lovest us,
With everlasting love.
