We would not sue for length of days,
For honour or for wealth;
We would not covet human praise,
Nor prize too much our health.
Jesus we ask with grief to mourn
That we have pierced thy heart;
We ask with holy zeal to burn
And with all sin to part.
We would thy great, thy matchless love
More fully comprehend;
We ask that we may faithful prove,
And love thee to the end.
Respecting earthly pain or bliss
We cast on thee our care;
But when we ask thee Lord for this
Oh hear our humble prayer.
