When we see earth so fair,
And heaven above,
Ocean, and land, and air,
All, all do prove,
That he who gave us birth,
And alone make heaven and earth,
When he sends tears or mirth,
Still, still is love.
How great the love of him
Who his Son gave,
Not for the seraphim
But man to save:
He whom God loved so well,
Came in this sad world to dwell,
That he might save from hell
Sin’s ruined slave.
Loaded with guilt and blame
Helpless we lay,
Doomed to eternal flame,
Hell’s certain prey;
Then God’s atoning Lamb,
When he from his Father came,
Took, by his death of shame,
Our curse away.
Why did the Father send
Jesus to die?
Who doth his grace attend
Us to the sky?
What could his mercy move?
He hath saved us thus to prove
He is eternal love;
This, this is why.
Glory to God in heaven
From all below;
To him let love be given
Who loves us so:
Love us then his praise renew,
And show by service true
How much we owe.
