Whence do our mournful thoughts arise,
And where’s our courage fled?
Our Saviour reigns through earth and skies,
His church’s glorious head.
Infinite grace, almighty power
Sustain us day by day,
Nor can his everlasting love
Grow weary or decay.
Mere mortal powers shall fade and die.
And youthful vigour cease,
But they that wait upon the Lord
Shall feel their strength increase.
Borne, as on eagle’s wings they soar,
Along their heaven-ward road,
Still as they rise exulting more,
Until they rest with God.
