Whene’er our hearts are fill’d with joy,
Whene’er by grief oppressed.
‘Tis sweet to think what God has done,
To make his children blessed.
Sweet to look back, and see our names
In life’s fair book set down;
Sweet to look forward, and behold
Eternal joys our own.
Sweet to reflect how grace divine
Our sins on Jesus laid;
Sweet to remember that his blood
Our debt of suffering paid.
Sweet in his righteousness to stand,
Which saves from second death;
Sweet to experience, day by day,
His Spirit’s quickening breath.
Sweet in his promises to read
The assurance of his love;
Sweet to look upward to the place
Where now he pleads above.
Sweet on his faithfulness to rest,
Whose love can never end;
Sweet on the covenant of grace
For all things to depend.
Sweet in the confidence of faith
To trust his wise decrees;
Sweet to be passive in his hand,
And know no will but his.
If such the sweetness of the streams,
What must the Fountain be?
What endless joy, what perfect bliss,
Jesus, to dwell with thee!
