Brethren, your work is not compromised,
In being solemnly baptized;
There is much more for God to do,
Much more that must be done by you.
Although your race is well begun,
Remember we have far to run;
And many a foe besets the road
Which we must take to heaven and God.
Truths now professed must be maintained,
The immortal crown by conflict gained;
Our faith, and hope, and patience tried,
And all corruptions mortified.
Trials and toils each one await,
Our strength is small, our dangers great;
And we must conquer every sin,
E’er we our rest in heaven may win.
Then let us wisely count the cost;
For efforts past will all be lost,
Unless we watch with constant care,
And strive for heaven with ceaseless prayer.
Our foes are strong, our way is rough,
We must not put our armour off;
But follow Christ, and boast no more,
Till heaven is won, and toil is o’er.
