O Jesus ever kind and good,
Thou camest down to be
Bathed in thy own atoning blood,
Baptized in sorrow’s sea.
Baptize us too, that we within
That fountain’s depth may lave,
Which God has opened for all sin,
Us from our guilt to save.
And like those happy saints in light,
Before the throne of God,
Wash thou our robes and make them white
In thy atoning blood.
Baptize us likewise unto thee
In influence divine;
And may thy Holy Spirit free
Our souls from every sin.
So shall we see thee when we die,
Nought can our hopes destroy;
Thou wast baptized in misery,
And we shall be in joy.
