Thou hast the shameful cross endured,
And all its shame despised,
And we are not ashamed, dear Lord,
With thee to be baptized.
Thou didst thyself thy people lead,
Immersed in Jordan’s flood;
And we in faith repeat the deed
Of our incarnate God.
That which so sacred seemed to thee,
To us should seem no less:
‘Tis meet that as thy followers we
Fulfill all righteousness.
