The God of Israel is our Lord,
Great is his name, his power divine;
In Christian temples now adored,
As once in Judah’s holy shrine.
The Lord, who brake the Assyrian bow,
And horse and rider overthrew,
Still watches o’er his church below,
And still will all her foes subdue.
That voice which bids the waves be still,
Can calm the wilder rage of man;
Or make the blind and wayward will
Subservient to his gracious plan.
