Lord, I have found it good for me
To bear thy chastening rod;
Afflictions make me learn thy law,
And bring me near to God.
Had not thy word been my delight,
When earthly joys were fled,
My soul, oppressed with sorrow's weight,
Had sunk among the dead.
I know thy judgments all are right,
Though they may seem severe;
The heaviest sufferings I endure
Flow from thy faithful care.
Before I felt affliction's stroke,
My feet were apt to stray;
But now I learn to keep thy word,
And love to tread thy way.
