PRAYER IN THE GARDEN

Jesus the Lord came freely forth,
And left his Father’s throne,
To tread the winepress of his wrath,
And trod it all alone.

His sufferings, marvellous and great,
Do all our thoughts confound;
And falling drops of bloody sweat
Bedew the hallowed ground.

Though sorrowful beyond degree,
And e’en to death oppressed,
Amidst the dreadful agony,
He thus his player addressed:

Father, remove this bitter cup,
And let it pass away;
If otherwise, I’ll drink it up,
And all thy will obey.

He with the Father’s will complies,
And suffers on the tree;
‘Tis done, he bows his head and dies,
To set the captives free.
