Happy, for ever happy be,
Whose heart is purged from sin;
His life is from reproaches free,
His conscience all serene.
Remote from anger, noise and strife,
Submissive and resigned;
He leads a holy peaceful life,
Is loved of all mankind.
With tender pity for the poor,
He hears their plaintive cries;
And out of his increasing store,
Their urgent want supplies.
Not wilfully would he offend,
or do his neighbour wrong,
Either with an oppressive hand,
Or with a slandering tongue.
For, and unwavering is his faith,
Unfeigned his acts of love;
Nor do his footsteps from the path
Of piety remove.
In sickness God will soothe his grief,
And be his constant friend;
At death will yield him kind relief,
And crown his journey’s end.
