Behold the penitent sincere,
No pains nor cost she spares;
But to express her love to Christ,
An ointment rich prepares.
She on his head the odour pours,
And well was it bestowed;
A grateful though a poor return,
For all the love she owned.
Behold the condescending grace,
Of our exalted Lord,
Who first could suffer the approach,
And then the deed applaud.
Still he displays his grace to those
Who seek his love to gain;
The humblest act performed in faith,
A welcome shall obtain.
