Forebear, ye impious and profane,
T’ approach a holy God;
Your hearts deceitful and depraved,
Your hands defiled with blood.
Ye hypocrites, who fraught with guile,
Around his altar wait,
Depart his courts, or lay aside
Your falsehood and deceit.
Dare not to take his reverend name
On your unhallowed tongues;
No more address unmeaning prayers,
Nor raise your formal songs.
But come, ye humble pious souls,
And tread his sacred place;
Here you shall taste the Saviour’s love,
And see his smiling face.
