Not all the powers of nature can
One darling lust subdue,
Not all the art or skill of man
Can sinful souls renew.
Parents may with affection teach,
But all instruction ’s vain ;
‘Tis God alone the heart can reach,
And form our powers again.
Though ministers, with heavenly skill,
Dispense the sacred word,
’Tis God must bow the stubborn will,
And inward life afford.
The holy Spirit, like the wind,
Displays his sovereign power ;
He softens and renews the mind,
Averse to God before.
