How fickle and how frail am I,
How changeable my frame!
I’m constant in inconstancy,
In weakness still the same.
Now I the heavenly course pursue,
Then take the downward road;
One day my purposes renew,
The next forsake my God.
I seek to mortify my sin,
The cherish it afresh;
Now grace exerts its power within,
And strived against the flesh.
Coldness and love in me unite,
And what I hate to do;
Contending armies daily fight,
And daily griefs renew.
When shall I reach that happy place,
Where sin shall be no more;
When will the doubtful conflict cease,
The painful strife be o’er!
