Affliction’s furnace is designed
The Christian character to show,
By this his graces are refined,
And he is weaned from things below:
To brighter scenes his soul aspires,
With steady aim and warm desires.
All the distresses which he feels,
Tend to destroy the power of sin;
The Lord who wounds him, kindly heals,
And yields him sacred peace within:
Purged of his dross, he’s patient still,
And lowly waits the sovereign will.
