See Felix, clothed with pomp and power,
See his resplendent bride,
Attend to hear a prisoner preach
The Saviour crucified.
He well described who Jesus was,
His glories and his love;
How he obeyed and bled below,
And reigns and pleads above.
On righteousness and temperance,
The preacher reasoned well;
And full conviction, sovereign force,
Sunk terror in his soul.
To strengthen the great truths he spoke.
He set the world to come
Full in their view, and boldly told,
The sinner's dreadful doom.
Felix sprang up, and trembling cried,
"Go for this time away:
I'll hear thee on these points again
On some convenient day."
Attention to the words of life,
Though Felix thus adjourn:
Lord, let me make those solemn truths
My first and last concern.
