The glittering spangles of the sky,
The sands which spread th' extended shore,
These could I number, yet, my God,
I ne'er could count thy mercies o'er!
This curious frame, these noble powers,
To thy creating hand I owe;
Thy providence preserves me safe,
And crowns my every wish below.
Oft in the visions of the night,
My thoughts still on thy mercies rove;
And every midnight wakeful hour,
I trace the wonders of thy love.
The pleasant, unexhausted theme
Each rising morn my soul pursues—
In fervent prayer ascends to thee,
And still her grateful song renews.
Nor days, nor nights, nor months, nor years,
Nor centuries would e'er suffice
To sound th' unfathomed depths of love,
Or touch the heights thy mercies rise.
Thy mercies Lord, through endless years,
Shall still my raptured powers employ;
Yet endless years will still but swell
My wonder, gratitude, and joy.
